Describe what has changed
Is the water completely cold, lukewarm or running out faster than usual? Does the issue affect every hot-water fixture or only one shower? Did it begin after an outage or other work? Record the model and approximate age if the label is safely visible. For a tankless unit, a visible error code can help the provider prepare; avoid repeatedly resetting a fault without guidance.

Gas, electric and tankless systems
A gas storage heater relies on fuel supply, ignition and safe venting. Electric storage heaters use electrical components and controls. Tankless systems add flow sensing and heat-exchanger operation to the assessment. A symptom such as insufficient hot water does not identify a failed part by itself. Testing should be appropriate to the specific equipment and performed by a qualified professional.
03 / THE SERVICE
Leak at a connection or leak from the tank?
Water around a heater can originate at a pipe connection, valve, condensate route or the tank itself. Location matters. A repairable external connection is different from a failed storage tank. Do not assume that tightening a fitting is safe or that all visible water means replacement. Avoid contact with electrical components or hot discharge and get the source assessed.
04 / THE SERVICE
Repair versus replacement
A component repair may make sense when the equipment is otherwise suitable and in sound condition. Replacement may be worth comparing when the tank has failed, repairs are recurring or the existing system no longer fits household demand. Ask for a repair scope and a replacement scope with the assumptions stated. Age alone is not a complete diagnosis.

Questions for the estimate
Ask which test supports the diagnosis, whether parts are available and what the estimate includes. Discuss access, warranty terms and whether additional installation work would be needed. Maintenance requirements depend on the model and water conditions; follow the manufacturer and qualified provider rather than a universal flushing schedule.
Common questions
Service questions, answered.
Can a tankless heater provide unlimited hot water to every fixture at once?
It heats on demand, but its flow capacity is limited. Simultaneous use and required temperature rise affect sizing.
Should I open the heater to inspect a fault?
No. Do not remove electrical or combustion covers for a website checklist. Provide safely visible model information and let a qualified professional assess it.
